"I moved from software testing to data science!"
Nilisha had spent 2 years in software testing and was keen to move to advanced analytics and data science for better prospects. Here's her story on how she moved from software testing to data science and got a data science job as a Data Analyst with a 50% salary hike:
My background
I have a total work experience of 2.5 years in the IT industry. Currently I am working at Born Bright Products, a consumer goods startup. as a Data Analyst. I have a Bachelors in Electronics and Telecommunication from Mumbai University. Post which I completed my Post Graduation Diploma from CDAC-ACTS.
Why Data Science as a career option?
I was a part of a BI project in testing for almost 2 years, but testing was not something where I could see a lifelong career especially with automation coming up. In data science, analysing data, applying algorithms and making business decisions seemed very interesting as a career path and I decided to upgrade myself.
How did you make your choice regarding choosing a training institute?
My skills were still basic and needed upgrading to get into data science. Online classrooms are always more comfortable for me as it doesn't involve travel and has all the interaction necessary. Edvancer's course was structured very well and seemed suitable for those who are starting from scratch. Plus the fee was affordable. I chose the PG Program in Data Science - UPES course .
Course and learning experience
I was new to programming and stats but since they started from the basics I was able to understand. It does require practice and revision on your own. The case studies and projects they gave helped me a lot in understanding the subject well and made me ready for real-world problems.
How did you get your data science job
I largely applied via Edvancer job opportunity e-mails and happened to get 2 offers of which I selected Born Bright since the industry they work in something that interests me. The interview process
There were two rounds of interviews and they tested me on my analytical skills, statistical algorithms, data cleaning skills and communication.
Advice for data science aspirants
Don’t get into data science just because it the new in thing that’s in the market. Please understand your interest areas and if data science is what you like then great, because the work never gets boring.
